The course consists: theory, practical on water elements, 2 X 6 hour days
The course offers; practicle participation in organised Club and State racing.

|
1. Personal Safety Equipment and Clothing.
- Knows the appropriate clothing to be worn and safety equipment to be taken when racing inshore and offshore / overnight.
- Understands the importance of minimizing the weight of personal gear.
2. Deck Equipment.
- Knows the correct techniques for the efficient and safe use of all deck hardware- e.g. winches, jamming cleats, traveller, jib track, spinnaker poles / bowsprits and their associated fittings etc.
3. Manoeuvers.
- Understands and is competent in each crew position during the following maneuvers: pre-start, tacking (including roll tacking), gybing, windward and leeward mark roundings.
- Can work as part of a team during all manoeuvers.
4. Sail Trim.
- Understands the theory of sail shape, including draft position and twist.
- Can operate sail controls to achieve optimum sail shape in light, medium and heavy airs.
- Can work as a team with other trimmers and the helm.
5. Balanced and Trim.
- Understands the importance of correct crew weight placement in all conditions and points of sail.
- Can hike effectively when required.
6. Race Structure.
- Understands Start and Finish procedures including flags and sound signals.
- Understands different course types including windward/leeward, Olympic Triangle, laid /passage course.
- Can plan for expected manoeuvers for a given course.
7. Racing Rules.
- Knows the basic Rules of Racing.
8. Communication.
- As crew can communicate effectively within a team.
- Knows what information to transmit to the afterguard - and how often and when to transmit it
- Racing Rules.
9. Self Awareness
- Understands the importance of physical fitness and preparation.
- Understands the importance of contributing as a crew i.e.helping with boat preparation and packing up, attending briefings and debriefings.
Prerequisite Keel Boat Intermediate.
Course includes theory, practical, practical on water elements as per YA Log Book, 12 hours (2 days)
First Aid and Resuscitation
Radio Telephony
Symmetrical Spinnakers.
1. Hoisting.
- Can rig sheets, braces, halyards and control lines (tweakers).
- Can set up the pole.
- Knows the correct pre hoist procedure for attaching spinnaker.
- Can hoist efficiently.
2. Trimming.
- Understands the importance of correct pole position and height on all relevant point of sail.
- Use of sheet/control lines on all relevant points of sail.
3. Gybing.
- Knows the correct procedure for Dip-pole gybing and end-for-end gybing.
4. Dropping.
- Can set up a headsail prior to dropping.
- Understands different drop techniques e.g. hatch, letterbox, float etc.
- Can stow spinnaker gear efficiently after drop.
Asymmetrical Spinnakers.
5. Hoisting.
- Can rig sheets, tack line, halyards and control lines.
- Knows correct pre-hoist procedure.
- Can hoist an asymmetric spinnaker efficiently.
6. Trimming.
- Use of sheet/control lines on all relevant points of sail.
7. Gybing.
- Knows the correct procedure for inside and outside gybing.
8. Dropping.
- Can set up head sail prior to dropping.
- Understands different drop techniques eg. gybe, windward, letterbox etc.
9. Can Pack a Spinnaker
10. Helming.
- Can helm effective on all relevant points of sail.
- Understands optimum downwind angles for differeing wind speeds / types of spinnaker.
- Can helm whist gybing.
11. Communication
- Understands the importance of communication, preperation, teamwork and coordination when using spinnakers.
Has been an active crew member for a 10 day on board sailing vessels whilst racing in commission through a Yacht Club.
